An intestinal disease that affects the entire organism is leaky gut syndrome. This article shows what it is all about and how to recognize it.

What is Leaky Gut?

If you translate the English term leaky gut into German, you already get a valuable indication of what it is all about. Permeable intestine: This is what the disease is called in this country.

Normally, the intestinal mucosa acts as a natural barrier to protect the body from toxins and pathogens. However, if this layer is permeable, pollutants enter the bloodstream.

In addition, the absorption of nutrients, trace elements and vitamins is disturbed. Leaky gut syndrome mainly affects the small intestine, but not the large intestine.

The immune system becomes active when it is confronted with the symptom. It reacts with allergic reactions and inflammatory processes. Therefore, it is not surprising that leaky gut syndrome is associated with many inflammatory diseases.

Another common consequence of the permeability of the intestinal mucosa is the intensification of food allergies and intolerances. The impaired absorption of nutrients often also leads to a nutrient deficiency, which has other negative consequences.

Autoimmune diseases arise mainly because the body often cannot clearly recognize the foreign substances. The immune system may therefore confuse them and attack its own cells.

Permeable intestinal mucosa in leaky gut

The intestinal mucosa plays an important role in intestinal health. In leaky gut syndrome, however, this protective system is disturbed. The disease affects the intestinal mucosa in the following ways:

It is getting thinner and thinner.

The amount of secretory immunoglobulin A (slgA), which is supposed to keep harmful substances away from the intestinal mucosa to a large extent, is decreasing.

The intestinal flora is disturbed.

The so-called tight junctions (connections of individual mucosal cells) of the mucosa no longer function, and gaps develop.

Development of leaky gut syndrome

How does a permeable intestine develop in the first place? The causes are often unclear. However, experts assume that a bacterial miscolonization of the intestine is decisive.

The human intestine is home to a lot of bacteria that are necessary for many functions. In addition to the good bacteria, there are also bacteria that damage the intestinal mucosa.

Where such a miscolonization comes from can look different. There are many circumstances that favor it, for example:

Infections

certain medications

Intestinal exposure to toxic metals

excessive alcohol consumption

spicy dishes

Stress

Basic factors that promote leaky gut syndrome are a damaged intestinal flora, a destroyed mucus layer, an insufficient level of slgA and a weakened intestinal mucosa.

Leaky gut due to poor nutrition

It is no secret that nutrition plays an essential role in intestinal health. However, many people are not aware that the wrong diet can promote leaky gut syndrome.

People with a permeable intestine like to consume a lot of sugar and isolated carbohydrates. Unhealthy fats and alcoholic beverages are also usually discovered. However, vegetables and fiber are hardly on the menu.

If there is also a sensitivity to milk protein (casein) and gluten, then the consumption of dairy and grain products can increase the development of a permeable intestine. Therefore, you should always pay close attention to what you eat.

Leaky gut from drugs

Medications, especially antibiotics, can damage the intestinal flora and increase the permeability of the intestinal mucosa. Antibiotics, for example, kill not only bad bacteria, but also good bacteria. In this way, they reduce the effectiveness of the intestinal flora as a natural intestinal barrier.

However, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (painkillers) can also have a negative impact on intestinal health if taken over a long period of time. In severe cases, internal bleeding even occurs.

Symptoms of Leaky Gut

The symptoms of a permeable intestine are manifold. Those affected often find it difficult to classify them correctly, as they could also indicate other diseases and ailments.

The most common symptoms of leaky gut include:

Chronic joint and muscle pain

Concentration disorders

Nervousness

Mood

Migraine

chronic fatigue

weakened immune system

Susceptibility to infections

Food intolerances

Irritable bowel syndrome

Flatulence

Acne

The diffuse symptoms of leaky gut syndrome cannot be identified as such for most people. Therefore, the permeable intestine is often detected very late.

Until then, chronic inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease can develop. Autoimmune diseases, asthma and allergies also form over time.

Diagnosing leaky gut syndrome

To find out whether you suffer from leaky gut syndrome, there are two tests that have proven to be effective:

Lactulose mannitol test in urine

Zonulin test in blood serum or stool

Lactulose and mannitol are two sugars that the small intestine cannot metabolize. They are therefore excreted in the urine. In leaky gut syndrome, however, the detectable amount of sugars in the urine changes.

A rising zonulin level in the blood serum or stool is also an indication of leaky gut syndrome. The protein has the function of opening the connections in the intestinal mucosa and thus increasing their permeability. Zonulin levels increase due to gluten, among other things.

In order to be able to reliably detect leaky gut syndrome, a marker is usually not enough. Therefore, both markers should be determined.

Treatment of leaky gut syndrome

Fortunately, leaky gut syndrome is curable. The diseases that have formed in the course of the permeable intestine can improve with the treatment. To do this, it is important that the intestines regenerate completely.

If leaky gut syndrome has been detected, the following measures should be taken:

Protection of the mucous membrane

Structure of the intestinal flora

Regeneration of the intestinal mucosa

Inhibition of inflammation

Nutrition plays a major role in this. In addition, natural remedies can be taken to promote healthy mucus formation. Experts also often advise taking probiotics and intestinal cleansing.

We at the Pittino osteopathy practice take care of strengthening your intestinal health and immune system in the course of nutritional medicine . We take the right measures to help you manage the effects of leaky gut syndrome.

Conclusion: Quickly recognize leaky gut syndrome

Leaky gut syndrome describes an increased permeability of the intestinal mucosa, which allows harmful substances to enter the bloodstream and various diseases to form.

The symptoms are not always clearly classifiable. Therefore, it makes sense for those affected to contact a specialist at the slightest sign in order to receive a diagnosis and to be able to start therapy at an early stage.

Diseases in the intestinal area lead to severe discomfort and can lead to other complaints.
